About - ABOUT IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN? A few weeks into the coronavirus quarantine, I was cleaning out my basement and discovered my great-grandfather's Super 8 camera from 1967. When the Black Lives Matter protests began after the murder of George Floyd, I realized it was a perfect time to put the camera to use. I decided to make this film to visually show how the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's was not long ago at all and that many things still need to change in the United States when it comes to equality. As a white man, I also felt like it was my duty to not be silent and to stand up to say something about the systemic racism of this country by using my art. This documentary features an interview from Martin Luther King, Jr. which was recorded in the year 1967: the same year my great-grandfather's camera was made, proving that history isn't just the past, but the present. - Kyle Bastin IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN? was shot on Super 8mm film in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 6, 2020 at the Black Lives Matter protest. I was expecting to come away with some great memories, but I received so much more. I learned that Puerto Ricans truly love like no one else. I immediately felt at home on this small island and even though it was after the storm, they still held their heads high and were proud of their home. After all of this tragedy, I was immediately inspired to tell the story of how their spirits are still afloat. -Kyle Bastin Still Afloat was produced at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. Willie’s Pinchos restaurant also located in Orlando is featured prominently in the film. Archival footage from Hurricane Maria are from various news sites but the footage during the credits is actual footage shot by the crew in Puerto Rico. Stine's hit children's horror series, "Goosebumps". I loved how the spookiness of the books and show would stick with me and make me see the world around me a bit differently, especially whenever I went into my basement. I was so hooked on them that in elementary school, I would even write short horror books of my own called "The Scaredy Cat Series". They were quite a 3rd grade hit. As I've progressed as a storyteller, I've grown to appreciate folktales. They are always fun and even a little scary for their kid audience, but they always seek out to teach them a lesson. With "The First Snow", I sought out to make a "Goosebumps" style folktale about the looming threat of climate change. I've wanted to talk about this topic for quite awhile, and I feel like this is the perfect genre to do so. I want to send a message to the kids that see this film that yes, climate change is a very scary thing happening to our planet, BUT it's in our hands to step up and lead the way.
